Curzon Cinema Clevedon
Curzon Cinema Clevedon
The Curzon Community Cinema in Clevedon is one of the oldest continually running cinemas in the world. It was opened in April 1912 and has operated continually to the present day. The first show raised funds for the survivors and relatives of those killed on the Titanic. The cinema was substantially remodelled in 1922, and damage from an enemy bomb in 1941 can still be seen in the fabric of the building. The cinema is Grade II listed and is much-loved by the local community as one of the few remaining independent cinemas in the area.
DHV Architects have lead a major re-roofing project for the cinema, incorporating exciting fund raising initiatives. Work to the interior of the cinema is now completed, including removal of the modern suspended ceiling to reinstate the wonderful original pressed steel vaulted ceiling and upper balcony, which was re-fitted with seating and balustrades. Care has been taken to preserve the characterful faded and worn patina of the old cinema so that customers still feel they are in a recently re-discovered relic. Photos by Will Goddard
